DEC aims to create a collaborative maker community by connecting people with diverse skills, equipping them with resources, and educating them through workshops. The DeCal Program (or just DeCal) is an aggregate of student-run courses at the University of California, Berkeley – here, students create and facilitate their own classes on a variety of subjects, many of which are not addressed in the traditional curriculum. BUSSA is the undergraduate student association for urban studies majors, city planning minors, and all other students at UC Berkeley interested in city planning.
The Fung Fellowship is shaping a new generation of entrepreneurial leaders focused on transforming health and wellness. Throughout the two-year fellowship program a diverse cohort of undergraduate students participate in a cross-disciplinary, experience-based curriculum that integrates design thinking and an immersive community experience. Fellows work in teams to develop technology solutions to address the real-world public health challenges facing at-risk populations. A unique feature of the MDes program is the design thesis—an independent research and design project that you will conduct under the mentorship of a faculty advisor.

Iterating with intention, MADE participants create and refine work according to real-world needs. Each student is also offered optional part-time employment in Co-Adjutant positions that support the operation of the undergraduate and graduate design area. Robotics at Berkeley is an undergraduate robotics club that supports student-led projects, organizes robotics-related events, and serves as an informational hub for robotics opportunities on campus. Global Architecture Brigades is a student-led, volunteer, design/build organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life in underserved nations through the design and construction of socially responsible and sustainable architecture solutions. Global Architecture Brigade's current emphasis is to help villages of Latin America. Beyond the brigade, the activist culture bred in the organization will function as a connective strand between the Bay Area architectural academic and professional community, and inspire local engagement in volunteer design/build initiatives.

The Dispute Resolution program curriculum emphasizes the development of skills vital to the resolution of business, domestic, education, management, public policy, church, legal, and healthcare disputes. Rooted in the social and behavioral sciences, the faculty and curriculum integrates such diverse fields as psychology, team building, law, sociology, management theory, organizational development, public policy, and economics. Organizations are increasingly aware of the importance of conflict management processes and facilitating collaboration to enhance productivity, financial success, and personal satisfaction in their employees. All of these factors indicate that dispute resolution is one of the most marketable skills in today’s world of business and commerce.

The crossroads between art, technology and society is an exciting new field for Art + Design practitioners. Through the combination of precision engineering, electronic control, sensory inputs, information design, and intelligent systems and haptic and sensory feedback the MAD program explores a variety of possibilities in these fields. The future of design experiences is about integration of the physical and digital—as hybridization or new invention.
Prospective students must submit an online application to be considered for admission, in addition to any supplemental materials specific to the program for which they are applying. In addition to CalArts' rich and diverse community and naturally collaborative atmosphere, the Institute provides several programs of study that can be pursued concurrently with a student's chosen metier. Formal faculty review of graduate applicant portfolios takes place in February of each year. Applicant finalists should be available for an in-person or Skype interview as a part of the application process. Eligible F-1 and J-1 students may work on-campus as student assistants, tutors, teaching assistants, etc. but not as work-study students.
Our students become creative thinkers and skilled makers in an inter-disciplinary educational environment, which provides the critical knowledge and expertise to re-imagine new contexts that challenge traditional structures and assumptions guiding art and design practice. Virtual Reality at Berkeley is a student group dedicated to bringing virtual reality to the campus community. This club provides students with access to virtual reality equipment and training and charters project teams to explore the applications and implications of virtual reality in diverse fields through research and development. By providing access to hardware and expertise, they aim to lower the barriers to experiencing and developing virtual reality technology. They are partnering with established labs on campus to investigate virtual and augmented reality as tools for robotics control systems, visualization of complex data, and as an interface for the future. Virtual Reality at Berkeley engages with the campus community through public demo days and infosessions.
With no requirement to specialize in a medium, you can focus on what’s relevant to your needs and interests. A minimum of 101 quarter units of upper division and graduate Design Media Arts courses are required. Our tuition is very affordable compared to other MA programs in Design in the Bay Area, both for resident and non-resident students. Students from 14 Western states qualify for resident tuition through the WICHE program. The Cal State Apply application for Design will include basic information and upload areas for a statement of purpose, portfolio, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, and other supporting documents. We recommend that you prepare these documents before starting your Cal State Apply application.
All applicants are required to submit a portfolio that demonstrates their creative and technical proficiency. Portfolios are expected to include both images and supporting text and should convey the context from which the project arose and the lens through which to understand and critique the work. Collaborative work is encouraged, but please credit all authors and highlight your specific contribution.

Recent visiting lecturers have included Sondra Perry, Ronny Quevedo, Ohad Meromi, Jamie Isenstein, Halsey Rodman, and Zachary Fabri.
